The site of one of history's most horrific crimes, Auschwitz-Birkenau embodies tragedy, inhumanity and the survival of the will. Today the museum stands testament to the inconceivable atrocities of the Second World War while paying tribute to the thousands of lives unjustly taken within. Originally Polish military barracks, it was transformed by the occupying Nazis into an efficient forced-labor camp and center for the systematic murder of Jews, Gypsies, Russian POWs and others considered undesirable by the Nazis. Tours begin with a 15-minute documentary filmed by Russian troops immediately after the liberation of the camp, vividly depicting the state of the camp's remaining survivors. The tour continues through Auschwitz and later leads to the larger Auschwitz II, better known as Birkenau. This portion of the complex was specifically designed and purpose-built to carry the extermination of European Jews. The Martyrdom Auschwitz Museum was establishedon the site in 1947 and was added to the UNESCO world heritage list in 1979.
